Button ‘lucky’ drain cover stayed low
Date published: May 26 2016

Jenson Button reckons he was lucky that the drain cover he hit in practice in Monaco only damaged his MP4-31.

Putting in the laps in the latter stages of FP1, Nico Rosberg dislodged a drain cover that hit Button’s McLaren.

The impact torn apart the right side of his front wing, sending the Brit into the pits for repairs.

The session was red flagged as marshals cleared the debris and FIA race director Charlie Whiting headed down to Ste Devote to ensure the drain cover was securely welded back down.

Monaco Grand Prix: Daniel Ricciardo sets superb practice pace

Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo sprung a surprise by comfortably heading the Mercedes drivers in second practice for the Monaco Grand Prix.

The Australian finished 0.606 seconds quicker than Lewis Hamilton, who set the pace in first practice.

Hamilton's Mercedes team-mate and championship leader Nico Rosberg was third, a further 0.293secs adrift.

Red Bull's Max Verstappen was fourth, ahead of the Toro Rossos of Daniil Kvyat and Carlos Sainz.

Grid-place penalty for Raikkonen
Posted at 13:46
Bad news already for Kimi Raikkonen. He's been handed a five-place penalty for a gearbox change.

Sebastian Vettel came out on top in final practice this morning, finishing just 0.018s quicker than Lewis Hamilton.
In fact, there was very little between the top four with Nico Rosberg third and Daniel Ricciardo fourth, 0.157s behind Vettel.
In Monaco, however, it's not all about the pace because on these tight and twisty streets, there can be no room for error.

Pascal Wehrlein got an absolute mouthful of smoke there. He was right behind Felipe Nasr when his engine failed.

The stricken Sauber is hoisted up by a crane and away from the track as marshals scurry on the clean up.
View from the Sauber as it was hoisted into the air.

Max Verstappen has crashed and is out of qualifying.
He touched the barrier at the first part of the chicane, breaking his front suspension and sending him careering over the sausage kerb and into the wall.

Daniel Ricciardo is on pole position for the Monaco Grand Prix.

That's a first career pole position for Daniel Ricciardo.

"Come on!" he shouts. "High time. High (BEEP) time."
