Hi,
I have the following part: 5171 8397 91107. Has anyone fitted this part or know who to fit it and where it sits under the front of the car? Anyhelp appriciated.

Its for the Z3.

It's upside down in the picture. It's the panel that fits under the middle of the car and extends across under the left side covering the fuel filter. My pre facelift had one. It's in the bin now.

The little square opening in the top right of the picture would have a removable cover that can be opened to gain access to the drain plug.

Mines not got one 🤔
Need to do some research i think
If the number is greyed out on Realoem it means that it wasn't fitted for your vin number

Not all cars had them. I dont know which did/didn't. As @Eddie Zedder said, on some models it's greyed out on realoem.

Look at realoem and in their picture, just below that big cover there's a small fuel filter cover. One or the other will be greyed out. So it seems some cars (ie my M44) had the big plastic cover while later/bigger engined cars had the small cover. I dont know if any cars had both and I'm sure some just dont get refitted by lazy/forgetfull mechanics after changing the fuel filter.

There's threaded studs attached to the underside of the car. Mine has the studs for both types of cover.

After chucking all my underbody panels in the skip I'm in the market for the little fuel filter cover if anyone has one spare.

My Apr 97 build Z3 M44 has such a cover. Assume all did originally, unless a cost saving measure by BMW.

my 1998 1.9 M44 has one

It looks like it was only used on the M44 engine ( info from RealOem)
