3 litre Z3 pretending to be Italian exotica. Two previous E89 Z4s.
Just dropped my Z3 250GT california into the garage for it's second MOT (as it is now) plus oil and brake fluid change. Nervous about them working on my car and it getting an advisory-free MOT.

I spent hours yesterday checking everything works; lights, indicators, horn, fan, wipers, washers, etc. Then I put stickers on all the warning lights and switches so they know what they are. I also had to change the reg plates to standard yellow and white ones.

I gave them an A4 sheet with 'instructions' of how to get the wheels off and on if they need to, how to start the thing (two keys) and how to use the window switches if they need to.

I have also asked them to change the details on the MOT database to mirror those on the V5, as it is still showing as a Z3 on the MOT.

Hopefully it will all go smoothly and they won't damage my precious car. Makes me nervous though.

No not unless you created a new mot record for that reg/ chassis which will clash with original one. ( new record should be made from v5 and presented vehicle details if that says z3 and tester changes it they could get into trouble for that )

The DVLA are the ones who should change the V5 details which would then also change the mot record and merge the 2 together.

The way I understand it:
The DVLA re-registered the car on the V5c and updated the colour change on the MOT database but didn't change the model.
The MOT tester changed the model to mirror the V5c as that is done via VOSA, not the DVLA.

VOSA and DVLA don't seem to talk to each other!

I gave the MOT tester a copy of the V5c and asked him to update the details on the MOT database to mirror those on the V5. Which he did. I wanted everything to be the same, that's all.

The car will still be tested as it was, as the VIN and emissions data remain the same. Only the name has changed.

When I changed my colour from green to grey I did that via the dvla and got a new v5 showing the new colour. But, 6 months later, the MOT database still said green. The MOT guy changed the colour in the MOT database so it matched the V5. I guess he has to confirm that the vehicle being tested matches the V5.

When I took mine for it's first MOT last year the V5c hadn't been changed (because they won't do that without a valid MOT). The tester obviously noticed it was now red, not blue so changed that on the database. When I got the MOT it said burgundy as that is what he changed it to.
About a week later it had been changed back to blue when I checked. God knows who did that.

Then I got the V5 details changed, along with the colour. From then on the colour on the MOT database said red (not burgundy or blue). But the model of the vehicle wasn't changed; it still said Z3. So yesterday I asked the MOT tester to change the model details so that it matched the V5.

I am now happy that both pieces of officially information are the same.

I'm in no hurry to change the make/model on the V5. It's still a BMW Z3. It's had two MOT tests with its new body. I assume the MOT tester still sees it and tests it as a Z3. After all, it is just a Z3 with a body kit.

I think the main reason for changing the details on the V5 is so the police don't get confused. If they do a PNC check the details will come up as a Z3 but they won't see a Z3, so you are more likely to get pulled and have to explain.

I think that applies more to a car such as yours. I don't think the average policeman knows the difference between all the different Ferarri models but will certainly see what looks like a very nice ferarri so if your PNC came back as a BMW he'd be duty bound to pull you over.

But police can't pull every car that raises an eyebrow. I mean there's tons of basic Fords with RS or Mexico written on them or bmw 316 with 'm' badges and body kits.

I'd guess they don't even look at the model. They see a grey BMW and their gizzmo says grey BMW, it also says taxed, tested and insured so as long as I'm not wearing my hat on backwards they've got better stuff to be going on with.

I see the descriptions on the MOT history don’t fully march the description on the tax and MOT check.

I'm likely wrong but to me it seems that, on a standard, un-fiddled with car, the Tax and MOT "Status" pages shows make and colour, engine cc, fuel etc but not the exact model.

The MOT "History" does show the make and model.

On a car where the V5 was altered the model, or whatever the builder declared it as, might appear in the 'Make' field or in the model/description field depending on where the dvla guy or mot guy keyed it in.

Are you talking about mine?
If so, what do you mean? The "CN52" bit?

That is on the V5 under "variant" (no idea what the CN52 means TBH). I supplied a copy of the V5 to the MOT tester and he just copied it.

Gemini says:-

"In BMW’s internal model coding, CN52 specifically identifies a BMW Z3 Roadster 3.0i (Right-Hand Drive, European spec with the 3.0-litre M54 engine)."
