Yesterday’s incident became even more controversial after Vettel removed his steering wheel from his car – which you are not allowed to do – and hitched a ride home on the sidepod of Pascal Wehrlein’s Sauber.

Mark Webber was penalised for doing likewise in Singapore a few years ago, although he actually ran on to the track to climb on to the Ferrari, and the penalty was because it was his third reprimand of the season.

Still, many felt that Vettel was to blame for yesterday’s crash, and that combined with the steering wheel removal and the taxi ride home, he might well have been punished.

Not as long as he drives a Ferrari he won't

Haas were granted leniency to fix Romain Grosjean's car after drain cover caused crash during Malaysian GP practice.

Haas team had been given special dispensation by the FIA to repair Romain Grosjean’s car after an estimated £500,000 worth of damage was caused when a loose drain cover led him to crash at the Sepang International circuit.

Only fair ...........

Vettel seems to be "untouchable". Singapore, now this. Anything that isn't a "cut and dried" penalty, he seems to get away with. :shifty:

Vettel edges out Hamilton in Japanese grand prix first practice.

Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel headed Lewis Hamilton's Mercedes in first practice as their title battle resumed at the Japanese Grand Prix.

The German was 0.211 seconds quicker than Hamilton, who leads Vettel by 34 points with five races remaining.

Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo was third quickest, 0.375secs off the pace.

The session was stopped for 16 minutes after a big crash for Toro Rosso's Carlos Sainz, who lost control out of the Hairpin and smashed into the wall. He was unhurt.

It stayed mostly dry for first practice. Mostly.
Different story for second practice.

It's raining.

FP2 "delayed indefinitely"

Race control says the start of second practice is delayed due to the rain.

So, people, this is not like when qualifying is delayed. Clock is ticking down. It will end 07:30 BST come what may.

7:33
A fleeting moment of aquaplaning for Bernd Maylander in the safety car. That doesn't bode well for any action any time soon.

Stoffel Vandoorne has changed into his casual clothes so it doesn't look like he is expecting to go out any time soon.

The rain has just eased off, though.

7:39
Session will start at 06:45 BST
Good news. Race control confirms that cars will be cleared to go onto the circuit at 06:45 BST.

That means we'll get 45 minutes of practice.

7:45
The rain has stopped and drivers are strapping on their race helmets.
The light goes green at the end of the pit lane, but no-one is in a massive rush to head out.

Daniel Ricciardo on BBC Radio 5 live. The Red Bull driver explains why he is in no rush to head out in this session.

He said: "The problem is we get one free set of inters on Friday but we don't get a free set of extremes, so any we use today will cost us. We can use the inters and we will but if it is extreme conditions we will not run.
