Lewis Hamilton can't beat Valtteri Bottas' time! He does a 1:28.792, 0.023s slower than Bottas.

At this early stage of the race, you can absolutely see that Ferrari has got the pace to try and stick with the Mercedes of Valtteri Bottas.

And Max Verstappen has just set the fastest lap of the race so far!

This is a vital part of the race for Hamilton.

Max Verstappen is into the wall!

Moments after pitting for more super-softs his brakes fail and he goes straight on at Turn 4.

"Brakes failed," he fumes. That's his race over.

It's all happening!

Carlos Sainz and Lance Stroll have both come to a stop. Stroll has stopped at the exit of Turn 1 with debris behind his Williams. It looks like there was a collision between Sainz and Stroll.

The safety car is deployed.

Lewis Hamilton has been handed a five second penalty for his part in that incident on the entry to the pits with Daniel Ricciardo.
 
Mercedes might have to think about swapping Bottas and Hamilton here. Bottas won't win at this rate. Hamilton can.
That looks to be the case as Lewis Hamilton passes Valtteri Bottas into Turn 1 and sets about closing in on race leader Sebastian Vettel, who is 6.3 seconds up the road.
 
Mercedes confirm Bottas instructed to let Hamilton through. Obviously realising victory was being put in jeopardy.
