Z3 1.9 Turbo

Hi from Canada! I've been kicking the turbo addition around for some time. How have they sealed the TB? I have two corvair turbos in my shop and would like to set one up on my 1.9. The biggest problem is blowing seals and as @Lee says check the spindles for even the least amount of play and replace if you find any before upping your boost to 10 or you'll likely end up doing a complete rebuild or replacement. Your motor and trans should handle about anything you throw at it within reason and would likely be good for twin turbos if the engine is nice and tight and your compression level is dropped to about 8:1. Hi from me too ! Raising the boost will all depend on how it was turbo'd in the first place.to be able to run boost its compression ratio must be dropped , depending on how this has been done possible a decomp plate and double gaskets not ideal but ok on low boost.
If on the other hand it has had bottom end work ie piston modification then hey why not.
I would look into the oil leak if its turbo'd it could be block pressure , check the oil return it doesn't take long with out oil to total a turbo.
The other thing with boost is that the engine would require a full management system to run high boost the fuelling parametres are very different at low boost the stock set up may adapt but anything hairy and im not sure but i nice bit of kit and look forward to seeing its and your progress enjoy

I personally wouldn't be concerned with the bottom end on any BMW motor. They're beefed up enough to take a considerable amount of boost. The pistons should be changed out to drop the compression to 8:0 or 8.5. Anything higher could cause pre ignition but an alcohol injection system would aid with that. There are adapter plates available to drop the compression that way but depending on how high the boost level will be I wouldn't trust them. JIM

Frankly, at this moment I will keep the car as it is, but I believe that the little devil of the mechanicals will not sit tight...

Very nice, been looking at this mod for a while it is cheaper than a supercharger. From what i have gathered anything up to 8PSI is ok with standard internals, over that you have to look beefing up the bottom end, lowering compression etc. but at the end of the day 6 - 8 psi should give you nearly 200 BHP, and that should be quite nice in a revvy little number such as the M44. Keep us posted on your progress please...

Hi there, from what I've heard it's actually cheaper to and a lot easier to have a supercharger installed due to the ammount of work and modifications involved, however never done ether work my self. There is a couple of very interesting z3 driving around the city I live in NZ. Ine of them is highly modified and fitted with a supercharger. The owner was kind enough to let me take his z3 for a test drive, it went very well but not as quick as my turbo z3, and mine is running on around 5psi at the moment. Anyway will keep you up todate with the progress and when i get the dyno done will let you know the bhp on it too

I'll look out for posts on this thread with interest, it would be nice to see a few more pictures of the engine bay and especially the turbo.
