Main Beam

Does your have Xenons mate?

Tony.

Yes I do, just trying to figure out where I can take the car to get some pics, give me a minute

Right found a brick wall, down at our local Waitrose car park, so I could try and recreate what was shown and here you go

I'm not sure of the sonctruction of the flaps that lift up but its possible that if they are pin hinges the left hand one could be broken so the flap is only lifting one side and partially the other, which could account for the difference.

Many thanks for that mate. It does seen strange that both light images on HST's car look identical which means , I think , that both lights have the same problem. I'm leaning still towards badly fitted bulbs.

Tony.

Ah yes, I see what you mean I was looking at the further away picture and thought was just the passenger side that was the prob

Hi guys, me again...is there such a thing as a lever on the headlight that engages a blanking plate for continental driving? I have a feeling that this may be my problem...
Yes there is but i have never used it so not sure where it is located

How do the lights work on HIDs on the Z4?
I presume that both dipped and main beam are from the same lamp using the usual shuttered mechanisms and the second bulb is for flash-to-pass only. On halogen units dipped is on the lens side and main beam on the other.

I had a distorted pattern when a bulb wasn’t seated properly.
The fact that dipped is ok here but main beam is distorted I would think that the shutters are not working properly.
Can we see what the beam pattern on the flash-to-pass is? That is just pull the stalk without the lights on. Also are they the same colour temperature as the headlights? I believe they are halogen bulbs.

If so and that pattern is ok then it’s the shutters or the bulbs themselves are not seated correctly. The shutter mechanism will simply hide the distortion on dipped beam. The dipped pattern is a typical HID one without the usual triangular shape towards the near side.

On second thoughts, I would bet on the bulbs. I can’t see one side of the shutter working and not the other. The shutter is just behind the lens I believe. I suspect if one side of the shutter was jammed it wouldn’t operate at all.
The other possibility is that the wrong bulbs have been used.

My car has halogen bulbs - little better than candles.

Just looked at the pics again. The light distribution on dipped isn’t very even. I think it is the bulbs, either incorrectly fitted or the wrong bulb.

So today ive had the wheels off and checked the bulbs are in correctly..they are..I also located the levers to adjust the lights for continental driving. They were in a down position and apparently they should be in the up position. I have done this and will post pics of what has happened to the beam pattern when it gets darker.

So I can now confirm the levers are there and are manually adjusted to allow for continental driving, this is how they look now...

Cheap fix

@HST , thank you. That's good info for future reference. Did you take and pictures inside the light by any chance?

Tony.

@HST if you have pictures of where the levers are would appreciate it if you could share them.
Off to Nurburgring in the morning and I’ve had to use this stick on things which are awful.
Looked all through the manual but couldn’t see any mention of these levers so a pic would be handy if possible.
