What should have been a straightforward job on one of our Zedshed Cymru members cars turned into a performance. Top bolts of the housing once we got to them after taking the alternator and its mounting bracket out turned out to be seized solid in the housing bolt holes from alloy corrosion, it had rust jacked the outer hole and cracked the casting. We were armed with a good replacement housing ready to fit that but these seized bolts brought everything to a halt. Despite heat and various spray lubes the bolts refused to give and eventually snapped. managed to get the housing off and then attacked what was left of the broken bolts, top left unscrewed ok but the right top only had a small amount of thread poking out. Mole grips didn't grip it enough so resorted to putting 2 10mm nuts on what was left, locking them together and gingerly undid the bolt using a 10mm open end spanner on the lower nut. Thankfully this worked and out it came, relief all round didn't fancy drilling it out. Quick consult of realoem for bolt part numbers and phone ordered from Local BMW Stealer, collecting next day so spent the rest of the day cleaning up all the oil from the leak that had been going on for sometime by the state of the under tray and side of the block. Going to put it all back together on Saturday, will be renewing the relief valve old one not in the best of shape, O rings gone hard and valve body seen better days.
Having gone through this I would advise getting a set of bolts and a new relief valve and the main gasket before you start this job in case yours is in a similar state, prudent to have a good condition filter housing as well, just in case!!

Having gone through this I would advise getting a set of bolts and a new relief valve and the main gasket before you start this job in case yours is in a similar state, prudent to have a good condition filter housing as well, just in case!!
