Insuring a car at repairers

This makes no sense. Why would you need insurance for a car that is off the road? Unless he needed some kind of 'public liability' insurance which the garage didn't hold on his behalf.

And who brought this to light? There is no requirement to hold motor insurance on a car that is not on the road. The article quoted the DVLA. The DVLA have nothing to do with insurance. I would bet if you dug a little deeper (rather than just the "multi millionaire Ed Sheeran has been a naughty boy" clickbait), there is more to this.

My car was at a bodyshop for three months with no insurance on my part. It also wasn't insured for over two years while I was building it. I never got taken to court!
 
There is a things that is Continuous Insurance Enforcement where if your vehicle does not have a current sorn against it then it must be insured.

Dont know why anyone wouldn't anyway
Lynne's zed been on sorn for 3yrs now but still insured as then i know if something was to happen to it then it would still be covered.

I would check that if I were you. Many insurers will not cover cars if SORNed. It will be in the very very small print. There was a big thread about this on the Z4 forum a few years ago.

But if it isn't SORNed it would need to be taxed. And you can't renew tax without current insurance. So it still doesn't make any sense.
 
Im afraid that you will need to take that up with the man in the shirt and tie that come up with these bright ideas.

I spoke to them in person car is covered as long as is in my driveway.

The details of Ed Sheeran's faux pas aside. It should be a criminal offence to convert a classic DB5 (or 6) into a washing machine.

Agreed, that is the real crime here, even worse than admitting to driving at 90mph down those country lanes
 
I'd read it as he hadn't Sorn'd it, but did when he found out there was an issue.

But I don't know what the true requirements are, which is why I put it out there.

And absolutely agree about converting such a special car to electric. Just because you can, doesn't mean you should . . . Well, in my book anyway . . .
 
When I read that artical about ed sheeran I read that the car was off the road at the workshop for years but was only SORN'd in February.

I suspect police done him for lack of insurance because it is the easy one for the cops to process.
