I don't like this either,

Formula 1 race director Charlie Whiting used his discretion in deciding not to penalise Max Verstappen for passing Fernando Alonso under yellow flags during the Australian GP. (Autosport)

Discretion cannot be a fair way to apply rules for everyone. If Whiting disagrees with that rule, it should be dropped. Same as Ricciardo getting his grid place drop from Practice?

Don't disagree with Charlie applying discretion Mike, what I'm saying is if it needs applying, then that rule is obsolete, regardless of whether Verstappen is involved or not. He (Verstappen) overtook out of track limits last year and eventually admitted he was at fault? Put Alonso and him in the same car and you'll see if he's washed up or not! Only thing Verstappen has is the foolhardiness of youth on his side.

Maybe, but he is a bloody good "foolhardy" young driver who was not promoted from the Scuderia Toro Rosso junior team to Red Bull for nothing by Christian Horner ....
 
So, if he's such a genius, what happened on Sunday?;) Still I say put him and Alonso in the same car ...............................

Red Bull are not top dogs.
Neither are McLaren.

Alonso :-

His best finish since returning to Woking has been three fifth-place finishes but he hopes the MCL33 will enable him to mount a title fight, although concedes current champions Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton start the season as favourites.
