Don't like that noise!

That works!
I don't know about the 2.8 M52, but my M54 3.0 had a knackered fuel tank vent solenoid (situated at the front of the engine near the power steering reservoir). I bought a new (cheap) one and that makes a very similar noise on tickover (it doesn't run all the time but a lot at tickover). It's either that or tappets IMO.

I thought mine was a noisy tappet, but when I unplugged the new vent solenoid it stopped, so I know it is that.

That dont sound too good .
When you raise the revs bar the noise getting faster with engine speed does it change in any way
Eg quieter, more noise or just faster.

You're going to have to isolate the source, it sounds like its at crankshaft speed not camshaft speed if the engine is at idle during your video.
It coul also be something in the serpentine belt system, water pump, fan alternator. Try listening through a long funnel and pointing it around different areas to see where if you can locate the area the noise is coming from.

That's a metallic noise almost certainly. I'd start by removing the alternator drive belt so you can discount that and the PAS pump. Use the old screwdriver to the ear trick to see where the noise is coming from. Could be the vanos unit but it's too loud to be a tappet.

The last time I heard a noise quite as 'insistent' and hard, it was a broken piston ring that had found its way on the piston crown and was hitting the cylinder head. It's unlikely but if all else fails a compression test would help. I doubt that the camshaft position sensor is relevant to this.

ETA the sound heard via a video can be misleading, but Rudyrov is right it does sound like crankshaft speed.
