Don't like that noise! - Cam Position Sensor Failed

Is it that you dislike the noise or still can't see the video?

If its technical, I'll try to host it somewhere else.

That works!
I don't know about the 2.8 M52, but my M54 3.0 had a knackered fuel tank vent solenoid (situated at the front of the engine near the power steering reservoir). I bought a new (cheap) one and that makes a very similar noise on tickover (it doesn't run all the time but a lot at tickover). It's either that or tappets IMO.

I thought mine was a noisy tappet, but when I unplugged the new vent solenoid it stopped, so I know it is that.

That dont sound too good .
When you raise the revs bar the noise getting faster with engine speed does it change in any way
Eg quieter, more noise or just faster.

Stephen.

You're going to have to isolate the source, it sounds like its at crankshaft speed not camshaft speed if the engine is at idle during your video.
It coul also be something in the serpentine belt system, water pump, fan alternator. Try listening through a long funnel and pointing it around different areas to see where if you can locate the area the noise is coming from.

That's a metallic noise almost certainly. I'd start by removing the alternator drive belt so you can discount that and the PAS pump. Use the old screwdriver to the ear trick to see where the noise is coming from. Could be the vanos unit but it's too loud to be a tappet.

The last time I heard a noise quite as 'insistent' and hard, it was a broken piston ring that had found its way on the piston crown and was hitting the cylinder head. It's unlikely but if all else fails a compression test would help. I doubt that the camshaft position sensor is relevant to this.

ETA the sound heard via a video can be misleading, but Rudyrov is right it does sound like crankshaft speed.

That's been common practice in my family's garage, and many others no doubt, for more than eighty years! It's what's known as a statement of the bleedin' obvious!
Well thank you Dick Tracy.... I am trying to get Mr. Medlock to locate the noise so we can help him.

Mr Medlock has spent the morning removing the cam sensor but the replacement will not be here until tomorrow. ( a real sod to unplug, especially if you have done the manifold swop). As I mentioned earlier, the noise and vibration is loudest at the fuel rail. This seems to be quite a common problem on M52s although various solutions are put forward like changing oil, adding additives etc etc but a couple have cured the problem by replacing the sensor - the theory being that with a faulty sensor, the injectors don't know when to squirt. Anyway, we'll see in due course. I've ordered a Meyle sensor but some have said that the system only really likes Siemens!

Siemens' automotive division were bought out a few years back by Continental - maybe they make one? Cheap MAF's are basically b******* ones with a resistor soldered in. If you have no luck with the Meyle one, try and find a used original.

Quick update: Error code 65 - CPS failed. Sure enough the 3 wires at the connector have cracked insulation and bare wires showing. Without the CPS, the injectors are firing in default mode (hence the noise from the fuel rail) and the Vanos is not working.

The Meyle CPS that I ordered is somewhere in the Evri system and may not actually work when I get it. Being impatient, I used Amazon Prime to get a Chinese item and fitted it this afternoon. The system doesn't recognise it and repeatedly throws the 65 error code.

My gut feeling is that I'm going to be buying the BMW part around £170 odd..... (No you're not - its unobtainable!)
