Unfortunately my Z windscreen got struck by a large rock while driving home today. There is now a 6 inch crack directly in front of the driver starting from the top edge of the screen.

I am insured full comprehensive with Admiral and they use autoglass as their certified repairer. From what I can tell it will cost around £115 in excess.

Have people had positive experiences with Autoglass on such an old car?

Thank you
Chris

You may have to wait for one to come in as I doubt they have them on the shelf. Also check the surrounds fit properly and the scuttle goes on flat to the screen with no gaps (unlike mine at present)

I had an issue with my E53 4.6is about 6 months ago (teach me to ensure bonnet is correctly secured before going for a blast) but autoglass guy was even efficient and did a great job. I think I found 2 small pieces of glass inside when he had finished but give the size of the Windscreen and the fact that he was on his own cannot fault it. Also do check if you have the plain glass with the bobbles at the top or have the "green tinted" glass (helps if you have the original purchase receipt) as I believe the "green glass" may have been an option ...

Yep "Graduated Tinted Screen" was an option on both the 1.9 and 2.8 in 1998 (extra £70.00). You may wish to check your original factory spec iF you want to stay 100% original.

I had my windscreen replaced a few years ago, my insurance company at the time wanted me to use a franchised screen company with a £50 excess. However their replacement screen wouldn't be to same spec as OEM screen, so the insurance company said if I paid £100 excess I could chose to have BMW OEM screen with tinted band fitted as long as I paid for it myself and then claimed it back from the insurance company minus the excess. It came to £831 in total which included new seal, fitting kit, new windscreen and labour.

Brilliant, I have be reading your old thread from when it happened. How did you managed to convince them to go OEM and only a £50 increase?!
I feel a large company like Admiral are not going to push over very easily.

I was with Manning at the time who insured me through an insurance company called Amlin. How time flies as it was back in 2018, it all worked out well in the end with OEM correct windscreen.
