5 years ago we did Saul’s overhaul when I was still doing them at home. Now she’s back for all the bells and whistles, the 2.2 lump is being removed and she’s being replaced with the 2.8TU very much like my old Z3 build that made a healthy 245bhp.

Aero goodness

We’re loose with some details for obvious reasons. Some of these parts are a fair price and don’t want a rush with people buying them up :)

Most excellent.

Pulling up a chair.

Are there plans to change the diff now there will be an extra gear?

Keeping the 2.2 diff with it's 3.38 ratio gives the zed feeling like M acceleration, if we kept the 5 speed box the top end is reduced to 135mph which used to bug the hell out of me when I ran this setup in my old zed. So bringing the 6 speed along with the same 1-5 ratios the 6th gets you back the good mpg on the runs. We saw 40mpg with Dino's 6 speed conversion.

Engine is out of the car already, not had an hour to myself to update the thread :p

6th gear would be lovely for the MPG on the motorway. Interesting the combination with the original diff is a good blend.

It's a pretty straight forward swap to be fair. Prop shaft needs shortening about 110mm and the linkage for this box also shortened. Everything else is from other BMW's.

So this Saturday we smashed the fist stage. The old 2.2 is now removed. (If anyone needs it let us know) only real hicup was fighting the steering rack going through between the cats, so we in-bolted the rack.

First jobs included removing the exhaust and drop shaft. Also disconnected the gearbox linkages and wiring loom.
IMG_7091.jpeg

Move up front we needed to get the fluid out the rack and radiator.
IMG_7095.jpeg

also started disconnecting the loom for the lighting and various sensors.
IMG_7094.jpeg

We had planned this job well in advance so Saul had the aircon degassed which made our lives so much easier. We noticed the front slam panel loose and noticed it had been replaced at some point. The old drilled out spot weld are a give away.
IMG_7097.jpeg

Once the front was exposed we needed to get the engine loom off the car and also the inlet mani, behind it is the rear lifting point.

inlets looking clean, 117k engine
IMG_7098.jpeg

hooked up the engine crane. Because we were removing the engine and gearbox we used our tilt bar.

As I said the rack linkage caused us some issues but quickly sorted once unbolted.

she’s huge!

car now ready for Saul to work his magic painting and cleaning things.
