so Z friends, that time has come. For just over a year now the rear end has been off . Through the wilds of winter wind and rain. the wife's insistence last year for a complete rebuild of the garden. 10 skips and a blinking designer! why oh why. I could have bought two Z 3's and a decent Z4 for the cost. so back to it. there is a lot of info on how to take the rear end off, but has anyone written , or can provide info on how to rebuild. have taken most of the undercarriage off., including cross member, spare wheel cage. (anyone know where I can get a decent second hand one?), all the heat shields. so ... how does it all go back together... any websites info very, very much appreciated. I ask due to age. cannot remember a thing these days... ta all.

You know what Haynes would say
Refitting is reversal of removal :D

But seriously first thing you need to do is make sure that you have all the necessary parts to rebuild.
Again how dismantled is everything at the moment .
Can you put up some more info on what stage everything is sitting in what work have you already done what stage condition wise are you wanting the back end in ( eg new bushes ,brakes ,bearings etc ) Also what equipment do you have access to and assistance ( as at a min you need to put the rear beam on with the diff attached as upper bolts to subframe difficult to fit in place so a bit of help yo manoeuvre it is good as still a bit of weight in it.

This was @Scooblitz zed at mine earlier this year that rear suspension has probably around £100 maybe more just in nuts and bolts and fitting kits .

Post up some more information of where your at then we can advise where you need to be going next and what parts you will still need to finish the build.

Stephen.

@MartinJ Wish I could be more of an assist but all work was done by Stevo. I am merely the tool retriever. If you have time, its a good idea to get as many new or refinished items as possible to go on as possible. I spent around 12 months gathering bits for the refurb. Even new nuts, bolts, replacement gaskets and lots of small things that can help with the overall refurb.

There are several rear end refurb builds in the Zed Shed forum and also in the progress thread section. @Synclare has some particularly excellent work gone into his refurbs that show the levels you can go to to get things very clean and tidy.

This is perhaps a great time to clean, jetwash, scrub and underseal the rear end before parts go on, unlike what I did .

From memory, as stevo said, perhaps attaching the subframe to the diff and then hoisting the beam back into the x2 bolts with a jack would be a good start. Arms, prop shaft and anti roll bar can be fitted around the subframe. Then parking brake, brakes and other items can be added onto these bits.

The Zed shed guys do the full subframe and arms in one. All built up before being jacked up into place.

Good luck and make sure you post up progress.
