Not sure if it’s me getting older and more sensitive to these things ..but ..fml! do people just not care about anything they do anymore.

So the story starts on Sunday..quick trip out in the Zed revealed the increasingly squeaky near side front brake caliper had finally seized. Steering went wobbly and the disk was roasting hot. Investigation revealed the culprit..mis-seated seal letting crud in.

Great I thought..I’ll get some refurbed OEM calipers as they are not too expensive and I was thinking the job wasn’t beyond my capabilities to try myself. So today the brakes arrived from a reputable company that just does brakes…can you spot their mistake🫤..apart from them being a mismatched pair and one not being an OEM one.(Two rights )
IMG_0385.jpeg

So..that issue being resolved I decided to familiarise myself with the job I needed to do. I noticed when I took the wheel off that the new shocks I had had fitted at a garage about a year ago was missing a cable clip for the sensors..fair enough.. the one from the old shocks probably broke and it’s not critical. I’ll get one.

What might be more important though is the great big bolt that should be filling that hole and holding the shocks to the knuckle!

My Zed has an MOT with no advisories 🤣

I deal with incompetence every day with my work. I pay sub-contractors a lot of money to carry out work for me (as I'm too old and knackered).
I have issues with 8 out of 10 jobs they do.
There seems to be no pride in what people do for a living anymore. It's just what they have to do to pay for their three holidays every year and be able to service the debts on their PCP Mercs, it would seem.

How many times have you been given a quote for work to be done and having accepted it you hear nothing more. My Daughter wanted an extension to her house built. She had five builders carry out a survey. All said it was a straight forward job and would quote within a week. Not one replied. No one cares.

Is it a generational thing? I guess most on here are Boomers or Gen X.. we had a work ethic beaten into us or we went without ;)

I think this is because it is too easy to make good money for people these days.
I do work for one of the largest blue chip companies on the planet. They were trying to get some roofing work on one of their buildings at Heathrow done a few years ago. Their facilities manager approached loads of roofing companies. They all knew who they would be working for and would have known the company has many, many premises. Not one turned up to give a quote. Not one!

In the end I gave them the details of a general builder I know since I was a kid. He did the work, got paid handsomely and has done many more jobs for them since.

I have been chasing a double glazing company for weeks now to change three sealed units in my house. They either don't answer the phone, or make some excuse why they can't come out. Apparently glass is hard to get!!!!

It is the type of job I would have done myself until very recently. I wish I still could, as I HATE relying on idiots who don't appreciate my money.

No it isn't. People of my age (late 50s) have 'bought in' to the attitude of 'work is something to do when you haven't got anything more interesting to do'.

It is a real problem in the UK and is getting worse IMO. It's spreading like a disease.

The right hand caliper is an E46 one - you can fit them and they work fine but you'd want a matching pair if only for appearances sake.

Tyre centres are the biggest ar5eholes out there. I wanted a pair of part worn 5mm Dunlops fitted to wheels. It wasn't long ago that a tenner or even twenty quid would see them fitted and balanced but after three knock backs 'we don't do that pal' one place did it - 40 sodding quid.

A mate of mine hates tyre places so much he just rings up Sytners who can get within 20 quid of the usual mob and it's worth the extra just to get good service.

A neighbours' 14yo who is being "home schooled", aka as not studying in this case, has proclaimed he is going to be "an influencer" when he turns 16yo and is planning to go and live in Thailand and be a photographer.

I said nothing =))

It seems that if you have a trade post Covid you can just pull a figure out the ether and the “customer “either bends over and takes one for the team or doesn’t get the work done .

£20 is the standard price now for fitting a tyre to a wheel in the absence of a purchase. I shopped around when I had my wheels refurbished no one would do it for less than £80.

To be fair, we've had it too good for too long.

The tools to do the job ain't cheap. Not much change from £25k for the tyre remover and balancing machine.

Minimum wage is around £20 per hour to the employer.

Valves and balance weights another £5 per wheel set.

£80 is too much, but £30-£40 is fair. Last time I was charged a tenner for a single swap, as the guy likes me because I know him and I saw him drop his keys in Aldi, and returned them to him. I told him, it was too cheap and paid £20.

Wouldn’t that make it £80 then🤷‍♂️😂

Holy cow man, that shock could have failed and sheered both those bolts off. I would be having a serious word with that garage.

Plus, teach you for not coming to see us with biscuits in hand!

I get the main point though, I work in the Nuclear industry and it's a big issue, more so people taking accountability for their actions.

An independent garage on the way into Devizes quoted me 120 pound to mount 4 tires, valves and balancing. There were no tires to remove or dispose of as the rims were new. They had a sh###y on because I had bought the tires elsewhere. Same garage that removed some locking wheel nuts for me but didn’t tighten in the replacement bolts, 2 of which fell out by the time I got home. Not just John Wayne that wears a cowboy hat!
