I put a claim in to claim Laundry allowance from HMRC and have had the strangest conversation with the idiots from HMRC.
I called them today as they had sent me a letter out with different figures on dating back to 2012.
Conversation went something like this
ME. I asked on the phone why the rates are different for the years from 2012 to present
THEM. Answer we dont know but you are already claiming laundry allowance
ME. but you should know as you decided the rates
Them. It depends what your employer put down
Me. So why are the rates different when i have been with one of the companies for 2 years and another for 2 years.
Them. I dont know i can only change things from here going forward. I can not tell you what they have put in the letter so i can not see the figures you have.
ME. Its in the letter you sent me
THEM. if you can send me the letter i can look into it
ME. so you want me to send you the letter you sent me
THEM. i dont have access to the letter
ME. but you lot sent it me there must be a record of it
THEM. all i can do is change things from now going forward
ME. so you dont know why i have been charged different rates and want me to send you a letter you sent me
i find the way you lot operate is pathetic GOOD BYE
What a shower of s***. No wonder the country is in ruins when idiots run all things financial

I sympathise Bill. I got a letter from them yesterday saying i owed unpaid tax for 2016-17
The letter had my tax code wrong didn't agree with the letter they sent 3 months ago.
Biggest issue i had couldn't understand most of what was being said as incredibly poor english? Not sure if i was ringing New Delhi or somewhere. Anyway after about 10 minutes he blamed the computer, i think, and said it would correct its self!
Must admit on putting the phone down my immediate thought was "were all doomed"

Yup. Every few years I get a letter saying I owe circa £3500 due to a tax mix-up from when I first got my military pension. I got a rebate as they over taxed me in 2007 but they keep asking for it back, after a conversation stating that there's only one of me and I only have one NI Number it goes away for a couple of years, be back soon though no doubt :bashhead:

When i was on the phone i did ask that i thought my allowance only covered tools and specialist clothing and not laundry to which they replied no it does not cover tools that is a different allowance and they could not tell me why it said on there website that it covers this and why there is nowhere that states i am getting laundry allowance to which they continually replied i can only change this now going forward.
The whole idea of me starting this was to maybe claim back anything i was owed but they dont have the facility to do this even though it is them that issue us with everything regarding PAYE.

Can't stand dealing with these people. I claim laundry and it's only about £60 a year. A work mate of mine is going through hell with them at the minute. They claim he's had a company car and owes £8000 in unpaid tax. He's never had a car he's a lorry driver, we don't get company cars but whatever evidence he produces they don't believe him. He's now had to get a solicitor involved. Bloody morons they are.

Same thing over here!! Got a phone call stating I had ten days to pay 17k in taxes owed or go to jail. I told them not to bother with sending the RCMPto take me in I'd meet them at the prison with my lawyer and for them to have their lawyer there and this would be settled in a very short time. Well then got a call from someone that actually listened to my tale and after about five minutes he agreed I didn't owe them a penny but they in fact owed me. Two weeks later a cheque showed up for 16k+! Figured that was the end until two years later when I got the same type call, short story a few weeks later 11k+ showed up after being told I owed them 16k. Go figure!! JIM

They are useless, had a letter saying I had under paid tax and my code was changing, then 3 weeks later I got another letter saying I had paid too much tax and cheque was on its way, which has since come for £74 ....Really just amend the darn code correctly. So whos betting I'll get another one soon saying I haven't paid enough tax and my code is changing?? I'm salaried so its not like my earnings change more than once a year

If you think their bad try dealing with the VAT lot. At the end of 7 yrs as a HGV owner driver I owed both egencies a considerable sum and the VAT man turned up at the door. He demanded payment so I offered him half of what I had saying it's only fair to the TAX man. Yep you guessed it, he said tax man can whistle so he got his share and the tax man got very little but the tax office were told exactly what his name was and his statement about whistling. I changed my job and was paying the taxman back for the next 5yrs, good job my siblings were all out earning.
By the way when he entered the house he was invited into the living room but decided to take a tour of the house first then asked me which BMW was mine out of the two parked outside. Ha ha mine was in the lockup round the corner. Give me the taxman any day of the week.
